5 Alternatives To Single-Use Plastic Bags

Apr 25, 2019
One trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide every year.

Often we give little thought at saying yes when we are offered one while shopping. A few minutes of convenience for us in exchange for years of detriment to the planet doesn’t really cross our minds. But the stress that plastic bags place on the environment, landfills and wildlife is undeniable due to our “throwaway culture” and overconsumption.

Thankfully, major retailers here in Australia including Coles and Woolworths have spearheaded positive change by eliminating single-use plastic bags, and almost all states in Australia have phased out the use of lightweight plastic bags. However, in NSW where there is no ban in place, many retailers still offer plastic bags as standard practice to customers.

With so many viable and affordable alternative to single-use plastic bags out there, all it takes is a little bit of planning to set yourself (and our planet) up for success and eliminate them for good.

Here are Zero Plastic’s five best alternatives to single-use plastic bags that you can start using today.

1. Backpacks
The trusty backpack has evolved and transformed over the decades and is no longer reserved solely for students. The multi-purpose bag is perfect for almost any shopping errand with pockets for smaller items and shoulder straps that leave your hands free. Even high-end designer labels such as Chanel have jumped on board. Pick one in a colour and size that matches you, feels comfortable on, and in a durable material so you can be sure it lasts for years to come.

2. Jute or hessian bags
Hessian or jute (the more refined version of the typical hessian fabric) are naturally biodegradable, making them the perfect alternative to single-use plastic shopping bags. Just keep a couple near your front door, in your car and in your desk drawer at work so you’re never caught out when grocery shopping again!

3. Basket bags
An ideal alternative to plastic bags when you need to carry heavier items such as liquids, basket bags are sturdy and a more stylish way to do your shopping, grocery or otherwise. This one from ASOS can also double as a handbag so you don’t need to remember to take extra bags with you when you leave the house.

4. Cotton mesh bags
These little puppies are the perfect switch for pesky plastic produce bags. Made from 100% organic cotton, they come in a variety of sizes for fruits, vegetables and bulk pantry items. Washable, reusable and sustainable shopping - check!

5. Boomerang Bags
Boomerang Bags is a global, grassroots movement that started in Queensland and has now spread across the world. It’s all about reducing plastic bags by making alternative bags out of gathered or donated fabric and distributing them to people who need them.
